Kitchen Cleaning 101: Experts Share Their Favorite Tips Of all the rooms in a house, kitchens usually require the most cleaning. Messes build up after every meal, dishes are left in a pile, and your compost fills up faster than you can take it out. Cleaning can seem like a daunting task. However, it doesn’t have to be. The Real Life Struggle of Laundry and SocksAs funny as it may sound as a Professional Organizer I often encounter the problem of what I call Orphaned Socks, yes, that pile or mountain of socks that is awaiting to find its match. It’s a headache that many households (or should I say Moms?) have to deal with and rarely gets done and it goes hand in hand with another headache for many, Laundry! What can we do to avoid this problem? For once you can eliminate having a myriad of colors, styles, and patterns unless you are a sock collector, and just have 1 or 2 base colors and styles, dark for boys, light for girls, maybe some athletic socks for boys, and ankle socks for warmer weather. The point is cut it down to LESS variety, make it more uniform, it's just socks! Make your life easier. If you buy them in bunches even if one gets lost or get a whole you have more of the same to match. If you have more than one child you will just have to pair by size. The simpler you keep it the easier it will be to deal with. You have no idea the amount of time we spend sorting and matching socks, hours on end, wouldn’t you rather do something else with your time? If your kids insist on having colorful socks, then make it their chore to sort, maybe play a game or Sock Sorting...lol… whoever sort the most wins a prize, or give them a reward, it might be fun and it will teach them there are consequences to their choices. It might serve them well later on in life. Point is: Make them a part of it. Your only other alternative is to wear different types of socks and call it a fashion statement! LAUNDRY The other headache I often hear people complain about is laundry, it is a necessary evil if you want to go out in the world smelling fresh and clean, but there are things to consider to make it an easier task. Issue #1 – Having to many clothes – Having too much will allow you to go longer without the need to do laundry. If you have 50 pairs of underwear you can go months piling laundry, same with the aforementioned socks! And let’s not talk about T-shirts!
If you pair down your wardrobe you will be forced to do laundry more often and in a more manageable size, that will take less time to put away and will stop procrastination. Avoiding the wrinkled look, achieved by laundry lingering in piles on couches and corners is attainable!! Issue #2 – Semi-soiled items – Items that touch your skin especially in warm weather can and should be washed after 1 use, unless it was 5 minutes. Garments that are layered and do not come in contact with skin, maybe worn for a short time and free of stains can be worn again before washing. Just hang them in a separate area from the clean ones to wear one more time, thus decreasing the laundry pile. Note: If the garment is for a special occasion and the time lapse until it will be worn again is long, it will be advisable to wash or dry clean it, otherwise it will yellow and stain. Issue #3 – Too many styles – People often have an eclectic wardrobe, with multiple styles, colors and items that match only another specific item. If you keep your wardrobe simpler and your clothes mix and match you will have to own less because your pieces match with multiples so you are not tied to a specific one (see capsule wardrobe post) thus creating smaller laundry piles and fewer loads of separate colors and wash cycles that might be ½ full. You will not only conserve water and detergent, thus decreasing pollution, you will also save time and money and... possibly a headache ;-) |
