What to Do and Don't for a stress free move. The average American will move 11 times in their lifetime. Spring/Summer is usually a busy period for the Moving industry, once the weather gets warmer people prepare to move. Summer is equally busy with families moving before the new school year begins. Even with enough time to think about their move, and enough time to plan most often than not I happen to be called in to help people pack their belonging at the very last minute. Why does that happen? Procrastination, stress, lack of planning and busy lives, yes, all of the above and planning a move is not really a fun activity, but it can be LESS stressful with some planning and professional help. Here are some tips & tricks for a stress free move based on real life experience while assisting families and individuals packing. PLANNING
DECLUTTERING Secondly but equally important, people don't start the sorting and decluttering process early enough, often time not until they start packing, and this greatly impact the speed in which you can pack. Even an organized packer will be impeded by waiting for you to decide what to pack or not. This is very IMPORTANT, declutter and discard what you can't fit into your new place, or no longer need AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE or you will end up wasting packing materials, and paying to move JUNK that you no longer need. ASSESSING THE NEW PLACE Before you decide what to take with you, either furniture or belongings consider your NEW PLACE location, size, storage available (closets, pantry) and layout. Your current furniture might not fit, your home decorations might not match the style/look of the new place, if you plan on making changes consider if your current furniture and home decor should come with you or not. PURCHASING PACKING SUPPLIES As previously said the right packing supplies will be of great impact, having enough is also key. You obviously will need boxes, but how many? I get asked that all the time. There is a picture above to help you estimate, but it depends on the amount of belonging you own. With this said there are some basics, you MUST HAVE!
I have also used “Space Saver Bags” that can be compacted to the point where they take up barely any space. Downside is that you can’t leave clothes in there for long or they will be very wrinkly. It helps if you have bulky items like jackets and sweaters since it compacts them saving space. Also great for blankets, comforters and pillows. Again there are plenty of options online, I found these on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Spacesaver-Premium-Vacuum-Storage-Medium/dp/B06XKYYP4G In conclusion, even though Moving is a stressful and time consuming event, it can be streamlined and organized in a way that will consume the least amount of time and cause the least amount of stress. Invest in planning and research and you will get the results.
